Tips For Heat Pumps During Winter & Snow

A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and air conditioning system that works year-round to keep your home comfortable.

Winter Heat Pump Maintenance Tips

1. Keep your unit free of leaves, branches, snow and ice on all sides. All heat pumps should be installed on Snow Legs, which raise the unit 3-6" above the ground. This allows for the maximum efficiency during snowfall. Look at low hanging branches which can bend due to the weight of ice and snow.

2. Remove excess snow and ice but be take your time! Turn off your system before clearing of snow or ice. Heat pumps require airflow moving thru to operate properly much like a radiator of a car. Use a brush not a shovel and be careful to protect the sensitive coils which are under pressure.

3. Look at your gutters and rain downspouts above your heat pump. As snow melts and refreezes gutters and rain downspouts can overflow and get clogged. Ice chunks can come crashing down on your heat pump and damage the fan motor and coil.

If your heat pump is making louder noise than normal or if its time to replace your system feel free to Schedule An In-Home Appointment and DIY Comfort Depot will come by and perform an honest evaluation of the next steps to be taken.
